Message the main purpose is to produce a scavenging effect at higher rpms that helps the exhaust gasses move out faster. Thats the theory anyway. The efficiency of the system depends the lenght of the pipes leading to and from the x pipe. As a result not all x pipes are created equal.

Besides this the x pipes have a bigger advantage in high reving NA motors where the scavenging effect produces a bigger gain. In a TT application the advantage, while being present, is minimal. As an example the stillen x pipe system dynos only 2 hp more than a hks hyper system on the same car / same day. I have the dyno charts somewhere. We tested this about 2 years ago when i was doing a group buy on the hks hypers.
